The challenge for industries is to find resistant, durable and inexpensive materials. Due to market demands, this challenge also falls to scientists, who seek to develop materials that meet these characteristics. Among the great discoveries is Ferralium, whose metallic alloys have performed well in several tests. Know a little about this material.

    Ferralium composition

Copper has been recognized as a material of great and significant resistance to corrosion for at least 6,000 years. Ferralium was designed with this feature in mind. The aim was to take advantage of all the most advantageous aspects of copper in order to offer a cost-effective product.

In this way, a material with good composition was created to act together with passive elements such as chromium and molybdenum. You have, then, a stainless steel with an extremely high resistance to corrosion. The strength of Ferralium is very high both in chemical environments and in seawater.

    passed tests

For years Oxford University has worked on experiments to prove the effectiveness of Ferralium. It has been shown that the beneficial effect of copper in suppressing the product, when exposed to chemical environments and sea water, guarantees superior resistance to materials used conventionally.

In Ferralium stainless steel there is great compositional stability, which gives it the ability to resist potentially aggressive chemical species. This is the key to corrosion-free handling of seawater and chemical process fluids.

Other tests were carried out using Ferralium as a superduplex, and the high standard of durability in this regard was also proven. In industries, the same material has been used for over 30 years, which shows its great ability to resist corrosion in different environments.

    applications

Industry has found that Ferralium enables many profitable applications in the chemical, marine, metallurgical, municipal sanitation, plastics, oil and gas, petrochemical, pollution control, wet phosphoric acid, papermaking and metallurgical industries.

Because it has greater resistance to corrosion and is more composite than conventional materials, it is also called “super”. Unlike these, Ferralium can be used in areas where stainless steel needs a lot of power. Traditional materials are either unsuitable for these environments or, at best, perform poorly.

An example of these areas is the North American paper industry, which suffered a veritable epidemic of corrosion problems a few years ago. It all started when the government enacted environmental laws that mandated the recycling of liquid processes in closed systems, chemicals (such as chlorides) and highly corrosive concentrations.

Papermakers realized that the equipment they were using was no longer suitable for many applications. Because they were used for a long time, these common stainless systems did not stand the test of time.

But Ferralium proved to be a different steel, with a high strength duplex alloy, with superior abrasion and very resistant to cavitation. Furthermore, it withstands high exposure in marine applications. It is stronger than commonly used products such as Duplex 2205 and 20 alloy, which is twice as weak as Ferralium.
