AISI APT
GENERAL
The AISI APT steel, known as “platinum steel”, is a steel with a high carbon content in the cold that works with an excellent quality-price ratio in the manufacture of tools and simpler components, but it requires great hardness. It has a simple heat treatment cycle that can be hardened in water or accepted. Of the steels hardenable in water and the one that has less deformation.
Chemical composition – C (1.20) • Si (0.25) • Mn (0.30) • Cr (0.20) • W (1.00) • V (0.10)
The supply conditions – The rectified condition in the annealed state with a maximum hardness of 230 HB.
APPLICATIONS
Mainly applied in spear points (digging), tools to work the wood, guide pasadors, pasador extractors, countersinks, blows, guide pasadores and measuring instruments. In the cutting tools, tales such as saws, drills, griffins, recorders, etc.
THERMAL TREATMENT
Stress relief: In the tools with complex shapes, with the elimination of heterogeneous material in thinning, sudden change of sections, etc., before the hardening in the temple, the stress relief treatment must be carried out to minimize the dimensional variations . The treatment must be carried out at a temperature of 660°C for at least 1 hour for every 25 mm and then cools down at less than 200 °C and then cools down.

Tempering: During the austenization period, preheating should be carried out to ensure temperature uniformity and minimize distortion. Preheat to a temperature of 550 ° C. Austenize the temperature between 780 – 820 °C . Heat for 1 hour for every 25 mm of thickness and add 1 additional hour for every 25 mm. For larger sections in cold water or cold sections for thinner acceptance. The maximum hardness can be reached in the HRC template of 67.
Template : It must be done immediately after the temple when the temperature reaches approximately 70ºC The temperature of the template must be selected according to the specified hardness. As this steel does not have secondary hardening, tempered it must be around 200 °C, but never below 180 °C. For this use as a guide below the curve of the temple. Keep at the tempering temperature for at least 1 hour for every 25 mm of thickness. The use of a minimum of 2 hours. The double tempered is recommended for greater dimensional stability.
Cooling at 820ºC. tempered twice of 2 hours each.
Nitriding: The steel can be nitrided to increase the wear resistance of the hardening of the surface. However, the nitriding process must be controlled in order not to significantly decrease the hardness of the tool body. The nitriding steel may or may not give rise to the formation of a white layer. The maximum hardness after nitriding is in the range of 900 – 1000HV.
